2007 marks the forty-fifth year of funding for the Temple Hoyne Buell Foundation. Over that time our grants have exceeded $66 million (including $51 million in the last twelve years) and helped thousands of quality organizations to address various human service, educational and cultural needs, primarily in Colorado. Since 1996, the Foundation has increasingly focused its guidelines on early childhood (prenatal through age five) as the critical foundation for the successful long-term development of children and, ultimately, flourishing adults. The research is clear on the comprehensive nature of healthy development in young children and recognizes the need to address the whole child including cognitive, physical, social, and emotional growth. To that end, in the last year 93% of our funding--almost $5,000,000--was designated to a wide array of early childhood services including center-based care, particularly for infants and toddlers; behavior and social/emotional issues; home visitation services to support improved parenting skills; and improved facilities. The Temple Hoyne Buell Foundation has helped to initiate and sustain significant work in the core infrastructure of early childhood development in Colorado. Areas of particular interest are assessment, evaluation, technical assistance, and professional development. Our continuing work has helped us to understand the vital role of leadership in this field. In July the first cohort of the Buell Early Childhood Leadership Program was launched in partnership with the University of Denver Morgridge College of Education and the Clayton Early Learning Institute. This program offers an academic certificate and Master’s concentration in Education Administration in the field of early care and education. The vision is “to promote quality in the early care and education system in Colorado by identifying, nurturing, and building leadership capacity in present and future early childhood leaders.” Our staff continues to be actively involved in many activities related to improving and sustaining the field of philanthropy in Colorado as well as very specific efforts in the area of early childhood. They also pride themselves in the strong personal relationships they have been able to develop and maintain with individual grantees. Many of these partnerships have been ongoing for seven or more years and have resulted in numerous “lessons learned” for everyone involved. These lessons have formed the basis for our current work and for initiatives still in the early stages of development. Long-time trustee Merle Chambers resigned late in 2006 after eleven years of service to the Foundation. For nine of those years she served as chair of the Grant Review Committee. In that capacity Merle helped facilitate our transition to an organization striving to improve the opportunities and environments where very young children live and learn in Colorado. We are most appreciative of the time she spent with us. She will be missed. In December 2006, Dr. Reginald Washington joined the Board of Trustees. Dr. Washington is distinguished in the field of pediatric medicine and has been active in the community and nationally for many years. He brings a new perspective and much passion to his service with the Board and is never reticent to ask the hard questions. We are very pleased to have him as part of our team. The trustees and staff of the Temple Hoyne Buell Foundation feel privileged to be part of the very important work of early childhood development. We appreciate the opportunity to partner with so many truly wonderful organizations throughout Colorado in order to make a difference in the lives of young children and their parents and caregivers. We invite you to spend more time reviewing our work described on this web site and to contact us with any ideas, comments, or questions. Or better yet, please join us in our efforts!
